Color Testing Metallic Paper

Decided to spell "metallic" correctly and link to the old thread with it spelled wrong. http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/f...available.html

Another reason for this new thread is to show some sample sheets received yesterday from www.itsupplies.com
link to metallic paper = IT Supplies - Metallic Inkjet Paper

Sample Sheets Received:

Note: The large 1/32 scale Apollo & the smaller CSM /Apollo next to it are printed on Pure Silver. The large Apollo was printed with a slight gray color added, you can see the difference between it and the smaller one that only had outlines printed [see how the grain looks different?]

Bottom to Top = Metallic Pure Gold, Metallic Pure Silver, Metallic Chrome Gloss, Metallic Moonglow, Metallic Pearl

Itsupplies is my number one source for shiny paper! Their customer service is outstanding!

Prices are fairly steep, but this isn't cardstock, it is very high quality, 260gsm & 270gsm 10.5 mil thick, photo paper.

Most items ordered take up to 2-weeks to get here in Alaska. Itsupplies twice delivered products to my door within 4-5 days, no charge!

They also sell printers. One of their newest wide formats uses either 12 or 14 (forget what the correct amount is) ink cartridges that uses white ink as color.

What I'm trying to match is the bright shiny parts of these photos:

Ok now to get down to how color testing was done:
*The autocad I use for designing is limited to 256 colors
*Printed little color blocks of all 256 colors
*Each sheet shown is titled what type it is.

Next post will show printing results.

Hope this helps with choosing metalic paper for your projects!

Photos of Test Results

Ok, tried different ways to try and get the same photo result for each type of sample after the prints were done.

Used a small piece of tape to hold the sheet being photographed at the same location. This almost worked...However each sheet came out different.

Before uploading to PM.com each photo had to be cropped to fit the photo size maximum. This caused the photos to look different.

The photos don't show how well the ink looks on each page. Colors are very vibrant and deep compared to the photos.

I tried to make a light photo box to diffuse the light and get rid of shadows to insure a uniform look. This worked better than just using a light over them, but some samples really reflected the light and caused "glare" spots at the bottom.

Here they are:

Index 110lb Cardstock (Used to show normal cardstock look)
Color Testing Metallic Paper-110-lb-cardstock.jpg

Brand is Simply Elegant Metallic Photograph Papers-

Metallic Chrome Gloss (Deep/Bright Colors-one of my favorites)
Color Testing Metallic Paper-metallic-chrome-gloss.jpg

Metallic Pearl (Almost the same as the Chrome Gloss except not as shiny)
Color Testing Metallic Paper-metallic-pearl.jpg

Metallic Moonglow (Greens and Blues look incredible)
Color Testing Metallic Paper-metallic-moon-glow.jpg

Metallic Pure Gold (Greens and Blues almost equal to Moonglow-other Colors look better than Moonglow result= Deeper/Shiny look to them)
Color Testing Metallic Paper-metallic-pure-gold.jpg

Metallic Pure Silver (Best choice for chrome look using very light grey color-notice bottom near glare spot and how it mellows the grain)
Color Testing Metallic Paper-metallic-pure-silver.jpg

For general projects the Chrome Gloss would be my choice (Pearl too), for gold mylar reproduction the Pure Gold with gold tinting, for shiny and bright rockets-Pure Silver is my choice.

Once again I bought the Simply Elegant brand of Metallic papers from Itsupplies. They have other types of metallic cardstock and photo paper, they don't all have sample packs like the Simply Elegant.

Very happy with the results of each print. Some will work better than others for specific projects. Looking for rust = a light brown on the Moonglow looks awesome....Etc...

Bought a huge roll of the Pure Silver Metallic. 2ft x 100ft roll cost $231. to get it to Alaska.

Been suffering through design & builders block, bought a Harley to do some riding, hoping it will cure the block.

Now I go through withdrawls if I don't ride, from one extreme to the other. When and if I ever get tried of the riding, I'll see what a big 1/12 scale Atlas looks like when made from the roll.

COST OF 2ft x 3ft Sheet Size:
100 ft = 1200 inches divided by 36 inches = 33.33 sheets. $231 / 33.33 = $6.93 per sheet. Won't be any alpha printing on these sheets!!!

Very cool! Just need to find those papers in South Africa or similar inkjet metallic paper here. Shipping costs to here are not cheap (often double the price of the purchased item).

Nice find Mike.

Are you able to post some full image closeups of the prints?

Those photos were as close as possible and still show the whole sheet. Had to do a downsize on the photos to get them under the 250kb limit as well.

Setup the camera on a tripod, with each sheet placed in the same spot by marking my mat. My version of AutoCAD only does 256 colors as shown.

Oh, I don't want to see all the colors in a close up. Just a few, to show saturation on the paper.

For what its worth-ITsupplies is having a sample pack sale until 5-21-13. For $10+ship you get 3-each of the paper shown above, total of 15-sheets.

I'll see what I can do. Maybe zoom in on the basic colors.
