Battlement/crenulation techniques

I'm making a castle with battlements, and my goal is to make the model easy for younger modelers with options for more experienced modelers.

So now I've come to the battlements, and at first I was doing them as one piece, where the front and back of the battlements are one peice that you fold over and the notches were black. So beginners could just fold and move on, and advanced users could cut out the black notches.

Then for some reason I changed it so you cut out the front and back separately- where the back side of the battlements are like a strip of their own.

I'm pretty sure I will go back to the on-piece solution now, but I was wondering if any of you guys with lots of experience had any input or other methods for doing battlements.

Edit:
I've attached a pic of the current, two-piece method. Here you see the back side, with the battlement strips at the top.
