Tissue paper.

Not sure if this is the right place but here we go...
If I use tissue paper to cover a model that I've built up on a skeletal frame does this still count as a paper model?
It's just that I make flying models and I'd like to have a go at making a model using the same technique's but using card for the frame.
Liz.

Yes, it qualifies! Tissue paper or silk span is just a form of paper.

I've tried to do it in the past, big balsa / tissue builder many years ago.

Getting the tissue tight is the problem. Humidity day to day gave it a different look, sagging wings, wrinkles. Can't spray with water to tighten....Doping warps everything.

Only tried it a couple of times, you might have some different ideas on how to accomplish, just letting you know what I ran into.

Good Luck!

Hoping to see a final project.

Mike

You could maybe try preshrinking the tissue. You've probably done it before, but if not, Make a reasonably stout frame, fasten the tissue securely to it around all the edges, then water shrink and dope it. Cut the tissue from the centre and use it to cover the model. I've used this method to cover thin card panels (to match the rest of the plane) and it works fine. Not sure about open framework - you might need to apply it in small sections.

Sounds like an interesting project!

And just so you know, wood counts as either pre-paper, or 500+ lb cardstock.

First of all, there are no 'rules' about what anyone can use in a paper model for components that need other materials; as long as most of the model is card or paper it's definitely a paper model.

Assuming you are thinking of what would be the lightest material possible for a flying model, my guess is that thin cartridge paper would probably not add significantly more weight and would be more durable. Could consider using some kind of spray coating to help on that front too.
