Interesting to see what tools we all like, I cheat and use free 11 blade scalpels, but do almost all cutting with iris scissors that I sharpen continually. The most used tool otherwise is a dull exacto for scoring. When I worked ER they were throwing out the suture sets and I gleaned a bunch of iris scissors, but I see they sell them at Michaels

It seems I'm going to have to edit my last post, scissors are useless when it comes to halinski spitfire formers. I think I have to resort to power tools.

No no. Just careful knife work. THere's a build thread over at Zealot if you want to see my own ham handed approach. The Spit is something different since there aren't really frames to support the cockpit work.
It is one fine model and really is rewarding to build. Have fun with that one and just enjoy it! |

Thank you for that, GB, I'll keep at it, the 262 had a cockpit a bit reminiscent of this also

Robust Compass Cutter
Hi Shrike,
Your comment on a robust compass cutter is something that I've also been mulling over. A #11 X-acto blade is not recommended as the cutting section isn't strong enough to withstand the forces exerted on it to cut a round circle (the blade will wander). I was thinking of several other features which would make it well worthwhile to own. An interesting point is that the Olfa CMP-1/DX isn't sold here. +Gil Picture of the Olfa CMP-1/DX Compass Circle Cutter: |

Point taken on the strength of #11 blades. My thoughts were more of ease of replacement. Perhaps the #16?
The CMP-1 without the ratchet is available. I've never used the ratcheting one so I don't know if it would be enough of a plus to be worthwhile. What other features did you have in mind?

Compass Cutter Feature Set
Hi Shrike,
I started writing them down and realized that the reason the ratchet is not sold in the U.S. is that it's covered by a U.S. Patent. The improvements that I was writing down are all Patentable. Those rights would be lost if publicly disclosed. Thus we need to continue this on a private basis..., +Gil |
