A better Sketchup unfolder
It's called Flattery and I can't believe it took me so long to find. It is infinitely better than the temperamental Unfold tool I've used for the past three years. Not only does it create a nice neat component instead of the ungodly mess left by the Unfold Tool, but according to my preliminary tests it eliminates the dreaded "mismatched faces" (CT knows what I'm talking about) ENTIRELY. Check it out, and report back.

That should be of great help to some, well, many many people. I have been able to import some lskp files into Rhino, but you have to Duplicate the Edges and it is rather time consuming. Google Sketchup is a great free program and people keep coming up with tools like this, it can only get better. The only thing I would like to mention. If you are a person interested in getting into CAD, Google Sketchup will do nothing for you. You can not , yet, generate blueprints, as far as I know, or any that are compatible with a lot of other CAD programs, which do share this interoperability. If you spend a lot of time with this, you will end up with bad habits, or congusion.
That being said,if your making paper models, and Google Sketchup keeps on with the Free Open offer, it will be hard to beat. On the other hand, it they get it to where they want it, and make some of the purveyors of the excellent add on offers they cannot refuse, then the party will be over. If I were in charge of Google, and planned to keep this open, I would have a Google Paper Model Forum that would take over the world. |

While we are on this subject, I wonder if someone would be so good as to do a tutorial on making a paper model with Sketchup and unfolding it so that I the most brainless, clueless beginner would be able to grasp it? That might help this one to get started. The interest has been there, just the smarts to grasp other tuts have not been too good.

Thanks Allen, Been there done that, but will try again. I'm not that computer literate, but maybe I'll find one that's real detailed, that will open my eyes and help me see the light.

Cad for linux - Art of illusion Home - Art of Illusion
Found the windows version a bit buggy, but you expect that with 'open source'. Also, try metasequoia in wine, it's got it's own in-built software render routines that shouldn't be too much of a problem for wine. ('software' under view in the left menu system) Btw, if your running linux, why haven't you got a quad boot? |
