Asking Permission to modify a Model...etc

I just got a much respected and much appreciated request from a Customer...

someone who has purchased one of my P-47 kits (from ecardmodels.com I assume)
and he wants to modify the kit while building it.
Sounds like he wants to add more details and improve the model.
Good for him! I hope I get to see it when its done.

He very graciously sent me an email asking for my permission to make these modifications,
even though he didn't need to.

The reason I am posting this is because we have so many discussions regarding copyrights and ownership, piracy and permissions
that I think many modellers have become confused as to what they can and can't do and not get into hot water.

Since I don't want this to become a big debate about these issues,
I'll just suggest that this is what you can do with my Free or Purchased Models:

1. Do whatever the heck you want!!

If we are talking about building the model,
you can build it any size you want, in any way you want!
You can make any alterations or modifications,
repaint it,
kitbash it,
light it on fire and smoke it!

You do not need my permission to do anything,
as long as you are using the model as it was intended for personal and private use.

If you post the finished model on a forum or website, or display it in public,
I would ask that you acknowledge the original Kit and Designer (thats me)
and maybe illustrate the modifications you have made
...but this is just a personal request, not a demand.

Remember when you bought that Plastic Kit of that Airplane or Race Car?
And you decided to paint it a different colour than the suggested paint scheme?
Or you decided to swap out the decals?
Or you decided to kit bash it with another model?

You didn't write a letter to the Plastic Model company to ask their permission, did you?
No...because you didn't need to!

The same thing goes for my paper models!
...build it for yourself or build it to give to someone else,
and you can build it anyway you want without asking any permissions from me.
This is not required or expected.

Nobody can tell you how you must use their Vacuum Cleaner or legally cook your Steak.
They can only suggest the best methods of how to use their Product.
They can stipulate terms of a Warranty Contract or set out the rules of Liability
but if you want to tie-dye your newly purchased white Underwear, you can!

Only exception to this rule is if you want to modify one of my FREE Models
and then reshare it as a free model, you will need to ask my permission.
You won't get it (lol) but you need to ask.

Since you can't legally resell any of my commercial models, then it it is assumed you also cannot make any changes to them.

Good for you, correct your thinking, acquiring a payment model that you think is missing something if you make changes right is to show these changes, and not necessarily by obligation make it so for respect to designer, that is supposed to be for personal use, thanks for your clarification, see ya

Seems like I was one of the people that needed clarification, hence my post on here recently. Thanks!
