Great find, Charles. We just opened a Harbor Freight here. I guess I know where I'll be headed next trip into town.

Oh, man! Be careful! It's at least as addictive as cocaine!

Same items down here in NZ $2.50 to $2.95 per pair.
...and that's in the local "$1, $2, $3" shop.
Go into the city proper, and suddenly you can add another couple of dollars easily.

One of the huge disadvantages in NZ is extremely high prices for everything.
Coupled with one of the world's very highest Tax Rates per head of population.
As an example: a litre of milk goes out at $2.29 to $2.65. while a litre of gasoline goes out at (close-enough to) $2.39. In short, in NZ; a nation awash with milk, milk is as expensive as gasoline.
In non-metric, a litre is close-enough to a fifth of a gallon.
So: either milk or gasoline = close-enough to $12.00 per gallon.
Extend the same priniciple to prices generally, and food in particular, and you can easily see why the place is hell to live in.

Kind and Respectful Regards Maj. Charles my friend, Uyraell.

Is beer cheap? You could drink yourself senseless and not worry about the high cost of living! I guess I'll just enjoy LOTR and the Hobbit and leave it at that!

Beer, tobacco, and anything that might , just possibly, provide the most remote atom of enjoyment, is also hugely expensive.
A dozen 330ml (read: "half pint") bottles of beer can go for anything up to about $22.00. A 40oz bottle of spirits, say Scotch, Vodka, Brandy, can be anywhere between $40 and $ 130.

Marijuana
, for those so inclined, is cheaper, but of course illegal, and earns the possessor jail time. That said, I can not have marijuana in any case. Nor have I such inclination.

Believe me, Maj. Charles my friend, you're far better off enjoying LotR where you are.
But then too, so also would I be, were I in Ga.

Kind and Respectful Regards Maj. Charles my friend, Uyraell.

Are the high costs due to everything being imported, high gov. Taxes or both? I'd love to visit NZ someday but could probably not afford to?,

Next time I want to buy single malt Scotch, I won't winch so much at the price! I can get a two-litre bottle of reasonably drinkable stuff for $40USD. Beer, really good stuff, too, can be had for around $1-1.50 per bottle...I mean really good stuff! Wine, the same thing. Well, I won't brag....I'll thank my lucky stars I was born here in the good ole US of A!

Govt., Taxes, Sales Tax, Prices: NZ (AEKU).

Basically my friend, it's because NZ is a captive market, for pretty much everything.
Much is imported, that's plain truth.
But: Domestically produced goods are charged at pretty much the same price as imported.
The added 15% Sales Tax on absolutely Everything means our beloved Govt. creams profits from everything except the black market.
The bastards in Govt. would tax breathing if they could, and that is an identical trait of both Republican and Democrat (to use US terms) parties.

The other factor is the Foreign Exchange rate being deliberately manipulated against the domestic population. Roughly speaking, $1.00 NZ varies between about 35 to 42 UK pence, and the same $1.00 NZ will vary between about 68 and 75 US cents.

So, it wouldn't be expensive for you to holiday in NZ.
You'd be starting with a financial advantage of between 25% and 30% the begin with.
Which means you'd find it relatively cheap in NZ.

Those cursed with having to exist here have no such advantage, unless they are already millionaires, in which case little to nothing can affect their daily living standards in any case.

As for (AEKU) :
An expression of mine, meaning: Ar$e End of Known Universe.

Kind and Respectful Regards J.A.Golden my friend, Uyraell.
