This could also be done with small pins, but less elegantly.
for rat lines, just pick a center tooth pair at the north end, and then bring the thread to the south side moving them out from the center. on both sides. the cross stitch east west will be parallel strings. just making the distinctive triangle shape of the rat line.

Good point - most ships have rigging that tapers in the direction of the top of the masts. Another useful thing would be to draw in Inkscape or find a good photo of the rigging, print at model scale and use as a template to put the guide pins in and check the alignments of the threads.
