Fascinating and ground-breaking work, thanks to you all!

Has anyone yet tried edge painting with water-based paints?

is anybody else having trouble making this work, at first i thought it was due to me having a crappy iron, bought a shiny new powerful one, and still no joy, hard to know where im going wrong, but i think it might be down to slightly damp paper, the plastic sometimes sticks to one sheet but not the other.
my underground lair/workshop might have something to do with it, its fairly dry but not crispy dry down there.

I had good success for the first few times in necrosoping but here lately it has been a failure. Not sure if it is the material, the iron, the heat, or the amount of time the iron is applied to the pieces. The iron is the same old beat up one used before. Tried it with plain paper and cereal box cardboard and it delaminated. Tried it with plain paper and bristol board and it delaminated.

SCEtoAUX,

This is from a previous post - unfortunately I'm not the only one having the problem.

The material that works is Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) without any type of coating to improve its characteristics. I think the best bet is with very thin poly drop cloths - there's no reason to coat it to improve cling and oxygen resistance...,

I recently had success necroscoping 80 gsm to 250 gsm - this is noted in an armoured car build but not everyone reads the specialist builds. I used generic (cheap) film. I was surprised how fast the process was - I had thought it would take a lot of heat to melt the film but it bonded in a few seconds. Couple of things I found. You can spot areas where the film hasn't bonded because the thin paper "bubbles" - a quick touch with the iron fixes that. It's worth putting some pressure on the bonded parts while it cools - with the thin stuff I was using it tends to bend after bonding.

Regards,

Charlie

Found an inexpensive new iron and it works good for necroscoping. Seems to have fixed the problem. The old beat up one finally gave up the ghost from all of the hard use in the workshop adhering heat activated veneers and other stuff that needs high heat. I did a heat check on the soleplate of the old iron using a non-contact thermometer. The temperatures varied a lot over the area of the soleplate.

So Gil, how does that translate to ordinary kitchen film I can get at my grocery store? For example, does Glad Cling Wrap qualify?

Thanks,

Gene K

As if my wife isn't arguing with me enough about using her kitchen counter / scissors and anything else handy hehe. Another thing I learned couple of weeks ago making a the glass air filter cover for a new holland tractor. If you have a mould of a glass object I.e a window for a car / chopper etc. You can take a piece of plastic, like the zip-loc type, put it on the mould to keep the shape, coat it with uv glaze that the wife would normally put on her nails, put it into a nail uv lamp kit (the type women usually put their fingers in to dry the polish / glaze) needs at least 20 min. The glaze will harden and depending on the amount you use it should be see through and consistent with glass characteristics. The plastic you used should be able to peel off leaving you with a nicely shaped window

Yes, ordinary cling wrap is perfect. Avoid some cheaper brands (like WalMart) but Target brand seems to work fine.
