simulate aluminum finish

I have a Breguet XIX in Spanish (Republican) colors.
The real aircraft was aluminum finish (painted and aluminum covered).
The color of the card model is light grey.
How can I simulate (not perfectly) the aluminum color?
Perhaps with satin finish?

Thanks.

Gil's method will work for unpainted aluminum panels. Alternatively, you could use aluminum duct repair tape lightly sanded with a very fine-grit sandpaper or steel wool. The advantage here is that the tape can be applied directly to the existing kit parts and the adhesive is built in (and it's strong!); the disadvantage is that you'll lose any printed surface detail and you'll be adding thickness to the parts.

Silver-doped fabric is another matter. I haven't tried it, but I suspect matte silver inkjet paper would be the best bet. I've seen a few different brands and it has the right look. I have used silver tissue paper with the same finish on balsa models and it's very convincing.

Of course, if it's a printed kit you have you'll have to scan all the parts, remove the color and print the outlines onto the silver stock. I don't believe anything short of spraypaint will transform printed gray into silver.

Why don't you just print it on metallic cardstock?

Depending on what your printer can handle in terms of paper thickness and weight, you can find lots of sources for metallic card.

Here's a few links to get you started:

Stardream Metallic - 8.5 x 11 - Cardstock Paper - 65lb Cover - SILVER - 25 PK - PAPER-PAPERS.COM

Paperworks Royal Metallics

Foil & Mirror

Discount Art Supplies Metallic Cardstock

Hope this helps...

Love Red River though I do, it's too shiny to represent a silver-doped fabric surface. A matte clear coat might knock it down, but some of the items lancer posted look like they might fit the bill:

I have experimented with the Red River paper, using a spray dullcote, and various paneling shading in the Mig-21 build thread/saga. The results turned alot of heads at my model club meeting last Saturday. If your interested, link is:

Might give you a few ideas.
