Here is my basic tool set. I have many more punches and pens, this is just a sample.

Ok since I’m the one whining about this tool sub section here is my contribution

Let’s start with colors and glues
I use twin tips markers, water based ink. The usual glues, small tubes is cyanoacrylate glue

Here on the left is a semi firm piece of rubber foam (from a floor covering for a gym) and different diameter of dowels, cake decorating ball tool for shaping paper by pushing down on the rubber pad and short an long rulers. Piece to be curved is positioned on the mat and roll over with appropriate diameter dowel. The more you push down on the piece the more curve sets in.

Top left corner is an Olfa circle cutter. The X-acto knife on the left is blunt blade for scribbling fold lines. Then curved blade scissors, different cutting blades, large scissors, tweezers and long nose flat pliers.

Last picture presents tools more used for plastic modeling but have some use for paper models. A set of Tamiya mini files and a pin vise kit with micro drill bit set.

On the matter of tools in general, regarding forming tools:
  • For cylinders of small diameters in fine increments, I picked up an aluminum tubing assortment. For the smallest diameters, there's steel rod/music wire.
  • For cones, think I'm going to turn various cone angles out of hardwood.
  • For spheres, most here are familiar with embossing styluses ("dotting tools").

Edge coloring could have sub threads. Coloring with paints, colored pencils, markers, etc.

That makes them not easy to find (they didn’t even came up using the forum Search engine). My point is that topics regarding tools are scattered here and there, although I admit that most of them are in the Tips and Techniques section, one has to scroll through tall the pages to find a tool related topic.

And I think that with just the few post in this thread is proof enough that a dedicated sub section on tools would be a relevant addition to the forum.
It would be a lot easier to look through a Tool only section.
But that is just my 2 cents
You are correct it was a thread, not forum. I agree with everything being said so far, we get plenty of new modelers that ask pretty much the same questions.

Thinking not only tools, but paper and other items that new builders ask about.

Mike

Now that we have a handful of people who think this is a good idea what do we need to do to get our tools sub forum?

We can just re-label this thread to "Tools" or "Tools You Use" thread. There are already tool threads in this sub-forum. No need for a tools sub-forum.
