Thanks for the tutorial Carl. When we still used 27' whalers in the Canadian Navy the oars were stored split on either side of the boat all blades aft. 5 working oars and one spare were typically kept in the whaler. It was not all that unusual for an oar to snap.

My little boats for my Russian ship have no oars, I wonder what the best way to make them might be?

An appeal from selfish ship modeler is that the designers provide oars of solid construction (blade and shaft together) or even only blade so that we can add shaft using round rod. C’mon!

I have to agree with this. In my case, it's more ignorant modeler though, I didn't know they stored the oars in the boats :o But I would have if they were included

CT, here's a .jpg of some oars. Each oar should be a little over 0.5" long. Let me know if it works for you.

And here is a photo showing the placement of oars on an active battleship around 1905.

Wow, thanks Carl. I am trying to find some card stock now. I may have to go out later to get some. These oars will be a great addition for the little boats. Did I read on here how many per boat? Must have been about two oars pr bench plus an extra. I will go back and check. May be latter today I will have picture up.
Just as a thought. Have you ever considered putting together all of your tutorials and other "how to" ideas into an actual hard copy book? Self Publishing - Lulu.com is a great place to run a couple of test copies out of to get a feel for it, and you could pitch them to hobby stores and book stores alike. I read all kinds of stuff on the computer, but I, like most people, feel that there is no substitute for a good old fashioned book! |
