A 3 page tatebanko depicting the moment Mushashi attacked Bokuden.
Included is a bonus wood block print of the same subject. A Japanese folk tale said that the young Miyamoto Musashi attacked Bokuden, while the latter was cooking dinner. Bokuden parried the sword with the lid of an iron pot, and calmly resumed cooking, as if nothing unusual had happened. In reality the story has no basis in fact, Bokuden had died 13 years before Musashi was born. The tatebanko probably dates to the late 19th century. The woodblock print was by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892). If you want to experiment with restoring the faded tatebanko pages to their original eye-popping 19th c. appearance, try opening them in a paint program, increase the colour saturation, and then auto level the images. The original tatebanko sheets were about 13 by 9 inches. Due to loss of image resolution, I think they would probably look better if printed on smaller papers. |
