Confederate small tin “Torpedo” 1/6 scale CT Ertz 2009
This style of confederate “torpedo” or mine came in all sizes and had any number of ignition systems. This one is a relatively small mine, about four feet long from point to point, and designed to be anchored to the river bed so that the mine would float just below the water's surface. These small mines could be dangerous, and were hard to see. The all metal mines were considered better then the earlier wooden “keg”mines that were made from old beer kegs. As many as 40 Union ships were damaged or sunk by these “infernal machines”.
