Here's a cool interview with Adam Savage of Mythbusers fame in which he talks about how he uses Pepakura Designer, makes paper models and generally makes things. Apparently this is part of a weekly YouTube talk show style series with Adam.

I just finished watching it and I found it very interesting. To me the most important part was the recognition that no matter what media, it all starts with something, that in your own mind, you have to build. All the technique in the world is meaningless unless there is an ending point you're passionate about.

I know what you mean. In the video, Adam's idea seems to be overcoming the bias mindsets people have regarding certain materials. I think the same sort of bias is why many people don't realize the validity of paper modeling-- at least until they try it for themselves.
