It doesn't have to be a big section... but it would be helpful

I too add my vote for a "Vintage Models Section" in the forum Downloads.
Ruben's idea for the layout of it and giving appropriate credit to the preserving blogs is a very sensible and logical concept. For what it is worth, I believe that preserving the history of these early models is a seriously worthwhile endeavour, before they become lost to time and age of the original materials themselves. The restoration of those same early models to "near original" status, and the various recolours done by so many skilled members here can only add enhancements in a manner that is both befitting and respectful of the originals. Kind and Respectful Regards my friends, Uyraell. |

Quite true, Uyraell.
I applaud any work that preserves history -- both the history that is portrayed by the models (and the insights into the time at which they were designed) and the history of the craft of paper modelling. And, of course, they are delightful objects in and of themselves, and I find that building them is a particular pleasure. I hope to present a display of vintage military models at the upcoming Papermodelers at Army Heritage Days event in May. At a minimum, Kevin's Eiffel Tower and my little tanks will be there. Don |

Don B my friend, there is a family-related reason why I believe so strongly in preserving these early model artifacts.
My father's Father fought at Passchendael , Oct 4th, 1917. Unlike many, he survived it and came home postwar to start his family. He was (as were many folk in those times) a cigarette smoker, who also happened to collect the "cigarette cards" that were present in packets of cigs in those times. My father still has a few albums, and many loose cig-cards. Most were never of interest to me: ancient cricketers, old buildings, and various colourful old Napoleonic generals on horseback were never going to attract a young boy who enjoyed "Thunderbirds" and "UFO" on tv. However, among much of what I then considered dross were some rarities I have never seen since. If one were willing to sacrifice the cig-card itself, a small model of a ship, vehicle, or occasional very rare aircraft could be obtained, in 2.5D. I have yet to see those scanned and preserved online anywhere, and I won't get hold of the ones I know of til my own dad has died, as they are part of my inheritance. Yet: those "minimodels" as we of today would call them, are of an era with the vintage models thus-far preserved and/or restored by many members here. In light of that, my interest in them is great. I'd add one respectful suggestion to Ruben's concept of the "Vintage Models Section" downloads. Those who have restored vintage examples, such as Ruben, CDavenport, Don Rockpaperscissors, and others should be nominated as the "custodians" of that "Vintage Models Section" and Moderators of a sub-forum if one results/evolves in future. In that manner, those who have contributed get to co-ordinate their respective efforts. Which can only be of benefit the other members here. Kind and Respectful Regards Don B my friend, Uyraell. |

How can we make that happen? Don, I have over one hundred various vintage models already restored.

One of us sends a PM to one of the Admins. Billy has been tracking these threads and may be able to do it, otherwise, one of us contacts Rick or Jason. I recommend you because I have not been doing any of the restoration and you have a greater familiarity with the categories and sources of the vintage decoupages.
B-Manic is a former admin and may also be able to shed light. I chatter in the Forum a lot, but am not too tightly wrapped on what goes on behind the scenes. Don PS: As soon as I hang up, I will PM Jason and Rick and bring this thread to their attention. |

My thinking tells me that we will need to be quite specific as to what qualifies as a vintage model.
It turns out that I have already restored an ancient Maly Modelarz flying model. I suspect we would need permission of the publisher to post the model on our site.

Yes, but a little bit of common sense and the verdict of an administrator before uploading will do the job...

It would be nice if Patricia from Agence Eureka and the people
who manage the other blogs too are invited to join this forum and be part of this kind of discussions. I mean: until now we are acting without their involvement, but they are the ones who have provided us with this great material. I guess their opinions and comments would be very interesting and enlightening. Having them directly involved in this conversation may be useful, and may help all of us to go in the right direction. Their participation could be great not only to decide what’s the best way to handle this material, but also they could provide useful information: they can tell directly what kind of paper/cardstock are this items printed on, and possibly share historical background on them; also how they rescued this material, so maybe we can follow their example. If there are “custodians” (to use Uyraell expression), is them Please remember also this: we as users may be interested in having a “Vintage” section both in the downloads and in the building boards, and interested too in the restoration of those decoupages. But we don’t know (and have not asked) if the people who originally provided this material agree to something like that. Also: the administrators have not expressed yet their opinion/decisions about this topic. We must therefore wait until they consider all the implications of that. Technically, some of that material may still be subject to Copyright. Probably there are other considerations as well. Regards,
