Vintage Decoupage Restoration

This one is entitled "Sortie d'Ecole" or School's Out! I thought I would show the process and progress thus far.

The first step is to bring the "paper" as close to its original state as possible, which means reducing the apparent effect of acidification which yellows the paper. I do this with a couple of simple Photoshop enhancements that reduce the yellowing and brings much of the color back to its original state. After that, it's painstaking removal and replacement of the yellowed elements.

Still, these vintage models did not have the benefit of modern inks and printing technology, so much of art work can look a bit muddled.

In the first image, I have started reconstructing the characters that will appear in the diorama. I have yet to color correct this page in its entirety. Instead, I started working on individual elements. In the upper left, I combined graphic elements I took off the net to recreate the donkey cart. But, the driver was irreplaceable, so I just recolored what the artist originally drew. The remainder of the sheet shows the parts in their unrestored state.

You can see it's quite a chore. I've already invested 20+ hours in this project and I am nowhere near complete.

The second sheet is near completion. You can see how I combined graphic elements such as the sky, tower clock, brick walls, chimney smoke, ice, wooden doors, and signage into the original artwork, some of which I will leave in its original state.

It's 5AM, EST in America and I have just finished working on this restoration. I've been at it since 8PM last evening. Time flies when you are having fun!

I finished the first sheet, the base, as it were. I am about 1/2 complete on the sheet that contains the characters. It, too, is a combination of repainting the existing artwork and compositing "live" elements into the scene. If you look closely, you can actually see childrens' faces.

I may go back and revise the first sheet with more real faces.

Might fine work Maj. Charles.
The improvement over the original is clearly discernable.
Congratulations on another well-achieved restoration.

Kind and Respectful Regards, Uyraell.

Finished! I'll print and build tomorrow. I got a little carried away with my creativity as the insert photo indicates.

What wonderful restoration work you do. I do understand how time consuming it is, but I want to thank you for taking on this task. I only hope that future generations will appreciate all the hard work you're doing to preserve the past. I know I do and thanks once again. the mainecooncat

I'm glad to see this thread revived. For a while there was a lot of activity in the vintage decoupage area. Not so much lately, and we haven't heard from Major D for a while.
