Actually, that is the German National flag ( red, white and Black ) of the time
and flown as the merchant marine ensign. The more familiar Imperial Ensigns,
derived from Prussian and Brandenburg sources, were used by the Kaiser and
by extension the Empire, and thus were Imperial Navy and Government flags.

The Red striped flag is the old flag of Homeport , Bremen, I believe.

I'm wondering if that wasn't supposed to be red-white-black. I see the blue on the U.S. flag is much lighter.

EDIT see above (beat me to it)

Okay, that makes sense, it'd be harder to make out if it was printed black! I was just confused about it (and stupid questions don't exist!).

Don: I had no idea this sub had such an impact. When I first purchased the model from Frank-Michael Goldmann years ago, I sent some scans to a German site devoted to the sub. It's still up and has expanded since then:

Willkommen bei www.handels-u-boote.de

Even if you don't read German, he has an extensive collection of images related to the "Deutschland" like the two below. Tom

1916 German Merchant Submarine "U-Deutschland"

Tom!

Thanks for that interesting link! That was very informative reading, especially on the U-Deutschland (or U-155), which is the subject of this thread.

And many thanks for the model sheets that you sent me! I have made some preparatory laser test prints, which reveal the need for some further retouching and careful color matching. If one could find a way to replicate the round shapes of this sub to a convincing degree, this might be a very worth-while vintage build.

All the best from Stockholm,
Bengt
