Siamese Elefanttaarn – Familie Journal
Having made a few of the ‘Nationernes Gade’ models recently posted by Tom Greensfelder, I was really taken by these small vintage buildings. An online search brought up many similar items, including this - “Et siamesisk Pagode-Elefanttaarn” (Siamese elephant tower) from the Illustreret Familie Journal of 1928.
I think the original may have been spread over two full pages of the magazine, but I printed the whole thing off on one A4 sheet, so it’s possibly a good bit smaller than it should be (might explain why the elephant was a bit ‘fiddly’!). Overall height is about 7.5”. The parts fit nicely, especially considering it was hand drawn nearly a century ago. |

Nice one. You did a great job with the build.
I built that model a while back and colored the inside of the pagodas, too. Mine turned out to be around 11 inches tall.

That came out great! Appears to be straight and true, which is hard to attain with many vintage models. Really nice result. Well done!

Reminds me of "Lucy the Elephant" which I visited many years ago in Margate City, New Jersey. Though the Siamese Elefanttaarn is much more handsome.

Beautifully done. One has to wonder what those designers went through, how many times they built and redrew their designs until they were satisfied with their efforts.

Thank you everyone. I’ve been making models out of card every now and then for the past fifty odd years but this is the first time I’ve ‘gone public’ so to speak. Your comments are much appreciated – and encouraging. As for it being ‘straight’, to be honest I did cheat a bit and fit some thin paper fillets where needed. It’s not 100% but not far off.
Good point Madbrit. The parts of the elephant and base are shown below - it’s hard to imagine just how much time, effort and trial and error was involved. Real skill. Doug… 11”… what can I say… Merry Christmas everyone, hope it’s a peaceful one wherever you are, but most of all, stay safe. |
