Something to keep in mind is if your printer can print photos on photo paper or can print greeting cards or business cards then it can handle the most common card stock used in paper modeling. You can find card stock at any office supply store and at places like WalMart and Sam's Club.
Some of the most common used are 110lb/199gsm and 65lb-67lb/177gsm. GSM being grams per square meter. Common sizes are USLtr and A4. A4 is a little longer and a little narrower than USLtr. You can buy some 9"x12" or 8.5"x14" card stock and trim it to A4 size if you want. Unless you are outside of the USA and A4 is the standard, then you can just go buy some.

Welcome aboard! Plenty of basics and techniques at Card Modeling FAQ . Plenty of great models, starters and masterworks, at http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/ or http://www/ecardmodels.com . Biggest advantage of paper today is cost compared to plastic - and the ability to print out as many parts or whole models as you like. Graphics quality beats my meager painting skills by a mile also.
