Happy to be a member!
I'm more of a plastic modeler, but I have found this site to have a wealth of information about some of the planes I've either built or plan on building. My particular area of interest is the early history of the Israeli Air Force, from about 1947 until 1965 or so. I plan to build at least one model of each of the aircraft they flew during those years. I decided to cut it off around 1965 because I'll be turning 69 years old this December and I can only build so much! Anyway, if you share my interests (or not), I'd be happy to hear from you.

Hi steinfl! Welcome to the forum. Thanks for joining. Indeed there are others who share your interests here. Just keep your eyes open and you should be able to pick them out pretty easily. How many models in the Israeli AF history have you done already? We're glad you're here. Welcome aboard!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!
In answer to Elliott's question, so far I have built only one IDF-IAF plane model, the RWD-13 which, technically speaking, was used before the official formation of the Israeli air force. However, it appears to be the first aircraft used by the Israeli's for military purposes. I am currently working on a model of an RWD-8 which is another civilian type of aircraft. It was used for pilot training and surreptitiously trained the first group of pilots for the Haganah, the underground guerrilla group that eventually morphed into the IDF. These planes were mostly used for reconnaissance, liaison and medical evacuation. However, as mentioned earlier, the RWD-13 took part in the first recorded aerial warfare incident when they fitted a Bren gun onto the passenger's side of the aircraft and strafed some Arab attackers outside a settlement. All models are 72nd scale, and I'm trying to proceed in chronological order, more or less, from 1947 onwards. |

Yes, they managed to obtain 4 of them surreptitiously in 1948. Apparently they were in very rough shape...basically stripped and only 3 could be made safe to fly. They were used on bombing missions and only retired shortly after the 1956 Suez crisis/war.
