New to Paper

Hi, everyone! I'm pretty excited about finding this forum. I'm new to paper modeling, only getting into it because I thought I was making templates for a styrene Datsun truck body I wanted to make. During that process, I realized how much I like working with paper. I'm hoping to learn a lot to make the process simpler, and the results cleaner. I know nothing about proper papers, glues, finishing, and most techniques.

The bodies pictured below are all to fit a 1:18 scale radio controlled truck platform. The pickup gets abused regularly (with damage to prove it), and the van (Dodge A100) are underway, with the white one intended for hard use, while the turquoise may end up being more detailed and accurate. Both designs are from scratch, based on the originals. Luckily, I have the 1:1 van in my driveway for reference.

My education was in design, I worked in metal fabrication, and I have started many models through the years... never finished one. I'm hoping to change that. Thanks for reading, and I look forward to learning from all of you.

That sounds like an ideal background for working in paper. Looks like you have some proficient design and construction skills already.

Wow, you’ve got some Skills here. If you’re worried about damage, you might consider plasticizing the finished work by covering with a layer of CA glue. In my kits I use this method to strengthen struts and antennas and the like, it might work for body panels too?

Thanks to everybody for the warm welcome. I appreciate it!

And thanks for the tip about CA glue. I have heard of it being used in the styrene world, too. It's been years since I glued my fingers together (;
