Thanks Gil. Even though my kit business is gone, I'm still building models and writing practicums. That part of the business is doing pretty good.

I began work on my Bellona today, got one part of the keel cut out and the first bulkhead which immediately brought up my next question, what kind of glue works best for gluing bulkheads to the keel?

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob,

Great to see that you have joined, those are some incredible ships!

Hardly wait to see how and what you're going to do with paper. With your experience with wood, I'll bet we'll see some additional improvements with paper eventually...Or even some great tutorials as you learn!

As for your question about glue-you can search using the search box, or go to the forum page (upper right) click on the tab and look for the different tip, techniques, and tricks pages.

Lots of threads on different glues, cardstock, printers and such to help you with your questions.

Best regards,
Mike Bauer

Welcome aboard, Bob! I think you'll find paper a satisfying (and cheap) opportunity to apply and extend your skills. Think of paper/card sheets as plywood - you can form any developable shape or torture it a limited amount into a complex surface. You can laminate (or buy the thick stuff, which is likely laminated from thinner sheets anyway) boards and timbers as well.

Can't speak to the keel/bulkhead question specifically - but any glue that works on wood works on paper. I'm still working off of a bottle of Titebond II cribbed from my shop.

Welcome to the site.

You could try some plank on plank type construction using cardstock as the material.

Thanks Yogi and Doug. I've got some Weldbond I always use in wood construction so I'll give that a try.

So far so good, cutting out bulkheads and keel are a piece of cake, time consuming though. It's those real tiny parts that I'm worried about later on.

Take care,

Bob

I had previously been unaware of your site, Bob, but am very glad to know about it now, although I am very sorry to hear about the disastrous effect of the economic downturn.

As the others have mentioned, all of your model building skills will be useful in paper modeling and you will not only quickly acquire a feel for the different medium, but will surely bring much valuable knowledge through your different perspective. I anticipate we will soon be learning from you as you teach yourself how to work in the new medium.

Perhaps I will be inspired by you finally to get to work on the Model Shipways tug Taurus that my wife gave me 15 years ago.

All the best,

Don

Bob:

Let me chime in here, and remind you to take lots of pictures to post here during your build. As you've seen from Doris' thread, pictures are great!

As for glues, I've found a great deal of success, ease of use, and availability to be factors in deciding what glues to use. Aside from the regular "superglue" types for certain applications, I've had the best success with Aleen's Tacky Glue in the gold and purple bottle, and Tombow's MonoAqua glue with the pen and brush applicators. Those are about the two best glues I've ever seen.

Glad to have you here! Start a build thread, and take lots of photos!!

Bob welcome! Your shipbuilding expertise will suit you well and card ships can be built in the house easily (good for cold climates).. Sorry to hear about some unfortunate reasons, too, but speaking for myself card ship building is very fun. My Cleopatra build starts in the "No Comfort and Joy" challenge/contest section and since is my first ship and similar to Bellona in era and scale and style of construction may be of some use. I have Fly's Kruzenshtern and it would be pretty big, too... I hope you are willing to help some of us trying to figure out details on some of these ships, to make the rigging better some scratch work is needed and I have had lots of questions for the ship guys and many helpful answers

Welcome Bob,

You will find quite a few members are wood ship model builders and a few of us were and are members of the SMA (Ship Modelers Association).

The Shipways models are undoubtedly the best paper models of sailing ships however they are not the highest level of what you can find in other paper models. But I’m sure you will be able to build them up to a superb model. Anyone one who uses the Hahn method of building has my respect.
