To Mike and Whulsey,
I know what you are talking about when it comes to feral kitties.
My first kitty in my life found me. He was a kitten and walked up
to me and stayed with me no matter what happened. I was allowed to keep him. He was an orange tabby and we named him tawney.
I believe that cats adopt you. They know who they want to
be with.
By the way,,, I have never liked the term FERAL. I prefer
to call them roaming kitties.
Best Regards,
Gary

Gary, interesting......

The feral cats in this part of the world are just that! Very very wild.

They will allow you to approach within about three feet, if you are careful, and then they take off. If you try to pick then up, even very young kittens, you will get torn to pieces.

They are definitely wild. We have rehabbed many ferals, but we picked them up when they were extremely sick, nursed them back to health and rehabbed them along the way. I still have many scars from this process as well! And while they become incredibly affectionate, and are extremely intelligent, they retain their wild traits.

I guess that the behaviour of ferals varies from country to country. See my earlier comments re Turkish and Indian cats.

Here one definite factor could well be that we still have African wild cats that inter breed with the domestic tabbies', so they obviously have a different genetic gene pool.

One of the ferals I have shows the physical traits very clearly - full of muscle, very large claws, tufted ears and white rings around the eyes. And in their own unique way they can cause problems. For example they resist confinement, so if they need to get to the vet it becomes a hit and miss process, as they will not generally go in a cat carrier. End result is the vet usually has to come here!

-----------

And yes. Cats do adopt you!

I note your dislike about calling them feral cats, but here, given their different behaviour and aggression compared to "domestic" cats, the term seems to fit well!

Dear Gary and Kevin:
The George story, George 22 pounds white longhair with a blue eye and yellow eye. I got him as a kitten in graduate school in New Mexico as the aftermath of a animal genetics program. He was one of the 4th generation of a cross between a Lynx and domestic cat. the first 3 generations all went wild. George was interesting I had him for 22 years. If it was his idea to sit on your lap he was great purr his head off you pick him up very unhappy cat. He was My test of finding a new vet, if the vet did not, go this cat is not normal we would go to another vet. The best vet was the one who took out calipers and did measurements. George ended up up going from New Mexico to Wyoming to New York. He got along with 4 other cats through his life.
Head was big, Ears larger than normal, Big Feet, Long tail.
Enjoy,
Miles

Dear Kevin and Miles and all other cat people,
I would really enjoy seeing any pictures of your roaming ( Feral )
kitties in your part of the world that you would
be willing to share with us.
Here are some of ours that I have taken and tried to help.
Two live in my neighbors garage where she has made a nice home for them. She works for a local vet part time and is really nice to do this.
She keeps her garage door up about a foot all the time so they have access to get in and out whenever they want to.
She also has a heated sleeping area for them and food and water
every day that is fresh. ( WHAT A GREAT GAL ) She named them LORAL and Hardy. Loral is the grey kitty and Hardy is the black and white Kitty. I have been able to get a couple of ours homes too.
Both on farms that the folks take great care in giving the kitties a nice safe place to live with shelter and all they need.
Charlie and Outside kitty are these.
Charlie is living with a good friend of ours and she sends pictures of him occasionally and updates on him which is really nice.
Roamer I have been able to feed a couple times and we have not seen him back yet. We hope he was just visiting and has a home.
Hope you all enjoy the pic's,
Gary

Hi Guys and Gals,
Just thought you might enjoy some pic's of my kids
Brumby and Callie with some of my Breast Cancer Awareness
re-paints I build as gifts for the medical clinic here in Minnesota
and also to just give away to folks I meet shopping.
I like to think of it as acts of random kindness.
Here are the kids helping me with the builds.
Best Regards,
Gary

Brumby getting in to the cotton swabs and Callie "babysitting" the mice, pretty cool!

Again, in the last pic, Callie has a serious look of indignation about this whole episode!

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the nice comments about my Brumby and Callie.
They are my helpers and model testers.
And my greatest joy when it comes to this hobby.
I could not do it without them.

I'm glad I moved to Incheon. Cats nearly everywhere!!!
There's a cat family living under our apartment, and I see them now and then.
