Kitty has a home
OK guys,
Good News,,, The roaming kitty I posted about earlier has a home as of today. It gets REALLY cold here in MN in the winter. It's supposed to get to 40 below zero in parts of MN this weekend. So I did NOT want this kitty to be outside for any reason. I worked with our local animal control officer and got a live trap from her. After trying for a week I was finally able to trap the kitty. The animal control officer took the kitty to a local vet and they Neutered the kitty and gave him shots, and checked for any diseases. He has a clean bill of health. THEN,,, I got with a friend of me and my wife's that has a farm and takes kitties to care for and give a home. She picked up the kitty from the vet today to take home to live with her sister in her house. They acclimate the kitty using a spare bedroom until the kitty can join the rest of their three kitties. So,,, YAY,,, Mission completed. Here are a couple pictures of the kitty and a link to my youtube video of our two kitties Brumby and Callie watching the kitty earlier this fall from our front windows. Enjoy, Gary https://youtu.be/hL81bxzyHEQ ( Callie and Brumby watching a kitty ) Last edited by musicman; 01-16-2016 at 12:43 PM. |

Great news, Gary. The thought of any animal having to be outside in that sort of weather just hurts.

Ah, well done Gary!
I wish I had known you were going to trap her, as I would have asked you for some detailed pictures of the cage trap. We need to catch some ferals but no one, including the vets, have anything suitable so I will have to get something made maybe. Would be nice to have an idea of what really works though. If perhaps you have a photo......and can explain the mechanism, it would be appreciated. Ferals by the way adapt well, and make really brilliant pets. They are particularly intelligent and responsive, and extremely loving - but generally only in relation to one person! What your friend is doing to introduce/rehab her is 100% correct. If she is a genuine feral though they need to be extremely careful handling her initially as they start off extremely vicious. I guess if this is the case they have found out already! I generally use welding gloves and very thick towels! Had my upper lip ripped open once though!

Here is a Google image page showing those live animal traps.
Live animal trap They work good and come in different sizes. Some have one entrance, some have two entrances.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for all your kind thoughts about me rescuing this beautiful kitty. Here is a picture of the live trap I borrowed from the animal control officer. As you can see there is a front door mechanism that hooks the door open,,, and when the kitty steps on the little metal plate to get to the food it releases the door to trap the kitty. There is a raise-able gate at the back of the trap for releasing the kitty too. It has a clip to secure it until you want to open it. All in all a clever live trap. ( Hope this helps you to see what should be used for kitties. ) They have several different kinds of these too, and in various sizes for different sized animals. Please let us know how it goes for you with your kitties. I hope you have great success in helping kitties find loving homes. Best Regards, Gary |

I have a feral joining us for a few days myself. Calico Gal from many pages back. Last time it got down to 0 F, she came in for a few days, so she is back in until it warms up this weekend. I'm sure she will visit a few more times before winter ends.
BTW ... -40F = -40C

Live traps
Hi again Kevin,
Just in case you want to order a live trap from the U.S.A. Here in the U.S. there is a retailer called Fleet Farm. They have a line of live traps that I bet they would ship to you in So. Africa. Please check them out if you care to. Hope you are able to help all the kitties where you live. Best Regards, Gary PS, this trap is for raccoon's and cats too. I would imagine that they have farm supply stores pretty much everywhere. That is where we get them around here, unless you can borrow one from Animal Control.
