Woodpecker

After seeing your models of little birds made after Johan Scherft papers and after making my own first attempt with a hummingbird model I was so amazed with the results that I chose the same technique for making a great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopus maior) which I needed for my small diorama (or a big base) for 1/32...1/35 figures, containg an oak tree (so gluing a woodpecker to its trunk looked as a bright idea). The original bird is max. 1/4 m long so the scaled down model should have been some 1/4 inch long (some 7 mm).

Well, the idea proved to be not so bright and so far I failed. Maybe I will try one more time (some day), but for the moment I decided to make the torso and head of a modelling paste instead of paper.

However before trying to make a 1/4 inch model I made one twice as big, in order to test the technique and to get some experience with gluing conical and rounded parts in such a small scale.

All the parts were cut simply with no measuring nor sketching the outline on a paper, but simply looking at the photo image of a real bird; no gluing tabs were left; all the nonconformities were masked with repainting some areas, the same as spots on wings and other different colored ornaments. The black "cap" was cut together with a beak as a one part out of the 200 g per sqm sheet of (black) paper and the same thickness was used for legs (the 1/2 mm strip of paper cut into pieces and glued together into "X" shape with a slanted console in the middle), only a grayish one. The remaining parts were cut out from a standard 80 g per sqm sheets: the rear conical part from the red one, the cylinder-shaped thorax, a neck and a head from the white and the wings and tail from the black one.

I love this, you did an incredible job! Mind-blowing how tiny it is. Very beautiful, the distinctive spots look fab.

Thanks a lot!

However the model was really simple and made of flat pieces, cones and cylinders only, except the head.
