Indeed the sails of GE were incompatible with the funnels of the boilers
In fact, the ship suffered the explosion of one of the boilers, possibly by interference of the funnel number 4 with the knife sail of that mast (4th), perhaps the worst located of all. In this photo, you can see that the 4th funnel is missing. Original design, but only 2º and 3º masts, had yards, and only eight dinghys by each side |

According to James Dugan in "The Great Iron Ship", the boiler explosion that toppled the forward funnel and killed five firemen was attributed to steam pressure building up inside the boiler jacket due to a closed escape valve. The number 4 funnel and two boilers were removed in 1865 to provide more storage space for the trans-Atlantic cable.
As for the sails, here's the author's footnote concerning the Great Eastern's maiden voyage to New York in 1860: "Apparently the sails were not used on the first voyage: none of the reporters mention them. With the exception of a trysail on '61 and sails raised on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday masts in '65, I found no mention of canvas in the Great Eastern data. Furled canvas is shown in photographs up to 1866, but after that the poles are bare and the yards are missing." Hope this helps. David T. Okamura |

Interesting dto.
Thank you very much for the information That will help me if I do the GE again, since I have it pre-build in structure, for a commission I will ask the buyer how he wants it. Mine, which is what I have put in this thread, will be more or less like the original design, with five funnels, before its subsequent modifications, especially those made for the laying of the transatlantic submarine cable Regards |

Excellent work. It is a shame that GE died a rusting death as a sideshow carnival in England.

Were there photos of the model somewhere in this thread? All I see is the black and white pic up top?

I have just received this beautiful Schreiber kit. I have vectorized all internal parts and also the side wheel parts in order to cut them with my laser cutting machine. This will simplify building this amazing model. One modification I will make is to prepare the masts and yards from wood. Not easy to make them from card.
