Hi Don, thanks!
Hi Dave, > You understand that it was a shame to paint it; you covered up all your hard work. From browsing the forum I do understand that most members here are very much “pure” paper modellers, so I am very aware that I am not quite playing by everyone’s rules and expectations. I am using card and paper mostly because I like the price of the raw material ![]() My intention was always for the model to be painted, in the typical style of a wh40k model, which is why I started with the blank template rather than the color version. Sorry to disappoint! > Still, I'm looking forward to the colors. Thanks, me too. I hope my painting skill is up to scratch though, I haven’t painted something this big before. I think you're doing very well Chris. Please understand that we have no "rules" as far as paper or mixed media go. While we have those who believe in paper only I think the vast majority of us are just as happy with mixed media as we are with paper only. In other words, build how you want. We're just happy that you're sharing your build with us. Please, continue on.

Basecoat
I've finalized the planned paint scheme, so now I just have to get down and do it.
![]() First step, using my airbrush I preshade with black lines, along the major features. This is rough, I don't have to be precise with it. Next I basecoat with 3 shades of red, from a darker color, through a medium, then a brighter highlight. I tried to get the brighter red to only come from angles close to vertical. The end effect is subtle enough, the black modulates the basecoat and adds depth to the model. I am now in the process of basecoating everything black again that will not be red. These are the tracks, weapons, lights, sensors, trim, etc. |

Mind blowing. You've inspired me to start another WH40K model - I'm currently working on a Photoshop repaint of a Leman Russ Vanquisher in Death Korps of Krieg livery. Your tracks are the best I've seen, and if I can anywhere near what you've achieved, I'll be a happy camper.

Thanks Don, that means a lot to me. Your wh40k builds are really great, and I look forward to your Vanquisher! It is a cool looking tank indeed.

Tracks, guns, trim, etc.
I realized that there was some unpainted paper in the recesses around the tracks, so I masked off the tracks and ran the airbrush over them again, then coated them with a gunmetal metallic gray which I toned down with some dark washes to make them look grimy.
Did the same (gunmetal gray + dark wash) to the guns and other "metal" bits, and started adding some more detail, then coated with a clear gloss to protect what I've done up till now. The major parts that still need to be finished are the doors and the raven on the main gun. At least the doors will have to be masked, they need the same bone white color as the cover on the main gun. |
