IL-28 GPM model 125 in 1/33 scale
Guys
I built this Ilyushin IL-28 Beagle bomber from the GPM kit a couple of months ago. First it is huge! is barely fits on the shelf at 1/33 scale. It is also impressive that it was printed in silver. The paper is somewhat delicate and needed lots of attention to make it look OK. I got into a few situations where too much glue is used. Also, I had some useful accessories. The most important were the transparencies for the nose and the canopy. You either buy it from Gomix or you must vac form a perfect form. I really think it needs the clear pieces for this size plane. My next accessory was a set of wheels. Now wheels are no big deal if you turn your own ( and I do most of my builds), but I had the opportunity to buy a few sets of wheels from Gomix as well and it made the job that much easier. The kit is really very easy for anyone who built planes before. And the cylindrical pieces are a snap to fit. I did detail the cockpit area a bit and added a few wires and an oxygen tank that can be seen. I also had a 2000 Kg bomb turned on a friend's lathe, but you can not see it unless you turn it over and look into the bay. Other than that it is "out of the box" model. Since it is large, you will need to stiffen the wing box. I chose wood dowels which are great and easy to work with. I checked the German and the Polish card forums and did not see this one built, so here are some pics. Isaac |

Sizes
The model is 26 inches span, 22 inches length ( including the rear cannons ) and is 7 inches tall.
The main wheels are 9 inches apart. What makes it difficult to place on a shelf is that the wings are straight and the gears are wide apart, so I placed it on a piece of cardboard under the gears to have it stay. It looks great now. Isaac |

Nicely done model. The IL-28 seems to be the Soviet
answer to the American B-45 during the cold war. I think they are of the same era....Ron |

Still in service
This is really a first improvement of a WW 2 medium bomber type with 1st generation jet engines. It relies on a bombardier in the nose looking down like the B-17 type. The tail gunner relies on visual tracking as well. The amazing thing is that it is still in use in China and N. Korea ( but may not be a primary bomber anymore )
I think the aircraft was used operationally up to the 80's in Iraq ( here is a picture of one of these relics taken in 2008 ). Isaac |

The glazing is particually well done.
Did you have any problems glueing the metallic paper? Tim |

Be carefull with the metalic paper. It is soft and too much glue will pull the parts in some locations. Otherwise it is the same as conventional paper.
Also use a silver sharpie on the edges. Isaac |
