R5IC2 Curtiss SBC-4 Helldiver
Here's another one of der Kampfflieger's Curtiss Helldivers, rescaled, redrawn, recolored in Red River with interior and clear canopy (R5IC2). This one is 1/72 scale. Here's the finished model.
Here are a few build highlights, and spare you the low lights. The leading edge of the underside of the top wing is yellow, so I had to splice the Red River silver paper. This shows the joint. The full paper wing ready for surgery. The top wing interior showing the building in of the rigging wires (silver Sharpied tippet). Underside of the top wing. Top wing all ready for final assembly - ya, it's a rats nest of rigging. The lower wing assembly with spar. Note the paper insignia glued over the Red River. Early fuselage assembly before wing assembly and the addition of the interior. Now with the interior and slots for the wing struts. With the wings all up and rigging wires going where they should. Another view of the rigging emerging from the fuselage.

Hi John,
Nice work on the little SBC 4. I have been threatening to add them to my stash, I can see I might have to get a round tuit and do so.

Outstanding work John. Glad to see the RR paper is not nearly as metallic as it is out of the package. And lovely rigging. Most assuredly well done my friend.

Thanks guys !
I spray on a matte coating after I print on the Red River to make it look more like aircraft aluminum. Here are some close-ups.

This is superb, John! You have really captured the look of this beautiful Golden Age bird.
There is no way I could ever emulate your skill, but I sure do love to look at the pictures of your models! Do n |

Thanks fine sir. Like you, I really like the BTW biplanes. Hope to make many more of these "yellow wing" classics.
Here are some more close ups. Before the canopy is installed you can see some cockpit details, including the tail gun poking out there. The radio antenna is visible behind the pilot seat. The engine is essentially the same design I used on the Stearman from the rigging tutorial

John,
Which matte coating are you using? It seems to be of a finer spray than what I am currently using, and I would love to give it a try.

Outstanding as usual! I've got a plane that has similar rigging as the Curtiss but has me baffled. If it's OK, I'll pm you for help.
