Side-by-Side B-17G Beta Build
A few months ago fellow forum member Ron40 asked me and Billy.leliveld if we would be interested in helping him out by doing a beta build of his B-17G model that he redesigned and added a fully detailed interior to. We both thought that it sounded like it would be a fun project and agreed to take on the challenge. We also thought that it would be a great opportunity to do a side-by-side build here on the forum sharing a single build thread. I will be building the model in 1/48 scale printed on a traditional matte cover stock, while Billy will be building his version at 1/33 scale on Red River metallic paper. (can't wait to see that!) After weeks of reviewing files, many telephone conversations, a bunch of private messages and dozens of emails, I thought I was all ready to go. That was until I realized that I had not printed out the latest, most up to date, color version. Now, I come to find out that I'm out of printer ink so I'll have to wait till tomorrow before I can start cutting. In the mean time I can show you the care package that Ron sent me which includes a complete set of Squadron vac-u-formed Crystal clear canopies in 1/48 scale which were made to fit the Monogram kit (These include the Cockpit canopy, ball turret, nose cone, upper turret, radio room hatch, astrodome and tail turret) He also included a pair of light weight foam wheels and a set of resin CW R-1820 engines. I can't wait to get moving on this. It's going to be fun. That's all I have for now but stay tuned.

I'm very excited for this as well. Are the 1:48 and 1:33 builds two different models (with different detail levels), is one just a resized version of the other?

cmags,
I have designed the model at 1:44th scale in Windows Paint program. Both the 1:48th and the were scaled up or down from the 1:44th scale. They share the same features and interiors. Billy has had to rearrange parts and change some to get it to fit on letter size card stock for his Red River Version. The standard 1:33rd scale will print on A3 (11"x17") card stock. The 1:48th scale will print on A4 size (8.5 X 12) paper....Ron |

I'm looking forward to seeing more on this build. It sounds challenging, but very rewarding.

What a great project!
For those of you who may have missed the thread, Kevin built the John Dell model of B-24D-10-CF, “Princess,” serial 42-63962, which was an aircraft of the 506th Bomb Squadron, 44th Bomb Group, flying out of Shipdham, England, except for temporary duty from June to November 1943, when they were transferred to North Africa to participate in the Ploesti missions. FGMM B-24 Princess During Army Heritage Days, Kevin asked surviving veterans of the 44th Bomb Group to sign the model, which Kevin donated to the Army Heritage and Education Center. http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/m...isle-pa-8.html (Post#79) With Kevin and Billy (King of Natural Aluminum Aircraft), this will be a very instructive and enjoyable story to watch. It is also a fine example of the ways in which Ron (Ron40) has contributed to the craft and encouraged many of us in our efforts. Don |
