Another great Nevil Shute novel/movie is "On The Beach" with Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins.

I concur wholeheartedly, but should have mentioned that the original title of the book was "The Inheritance."

Haven't seen any references to the book being called The Inheritance. There is a reference that the U.S. title is The Legacy. Any way, still a good story.

The woman with the led role in the film, Virginia McKenna, was the female lead in Born Free, or at least she was the human female lead.

Just discovered that "A Town Like Alice" is available to watch instantly on Netflix. Another night of Neville Shute!

Big coincidence this past Friday that an anthology of Nevil Shute stories appeared at the back of a bookcase, so I immediately read No Highway. Good story, indeed, and the fact the it only took a day and a half demonstrates Shute's ability as a writer. This is even more the case when you reflect that the stories are about ordinary people, yet they go by with the speed I usually associate with adventure thrillers.
Long ago I read A Town Like Alice, Pied Piper, and The Far Country, but that still leaves The Chequerboard to enjoy for the first time.
