Thanks, Billy!
Hadn't seen that before. It always reminded me of an American plywood attempt at the Me.209 V3 (ok, ok, Bf 209 V3, aka Me.109R, etc etc.) I know my post on this thread could be seen as a bit necropost, but it didn't seem wise to open a whole new thread on the same topic. Kind and Respectful Regards, Billy, Uyraell.

Bristol Bombay. A bomber/troop transport from the early days of WW2. It was used for ferrying supplies to the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1940 but its main service was in the Western Desert.

Stirling and Sunderland: cousins.
Quote:
As has been mentioned elsewhere in forum: Because the Air Ministry insisted the Stirling be capable of fitting within the then-existing hangars, it inherited the wings off the Sunderland. Unfortunately, the angle of incidence, and limited span of said wing was such that it limited both the ceiling and lifting performance of the Stirling, which is one reason the aircraft was a relative failure in its' assigned role as bomber. However, this is not to say the Stirling was a failure over-all: it went on to serve reasonably well in other roles, among which were transport, paratroop and agent dropping, and carrying ecm-jamming and counter-jamming equipment. In some ways, the Stirling was the unfortunate pioneer of a design formula for a strategic bomber which saw full fruition in both the Lincoln and B36 Peacemaker, albeit that both of those were (despite design having been begun during) decidedly post-WW2. Kind and Respectful Regards, Uyraell.
