From memories of holidays in Normandy, a 'proper' 'French toilet' should only have the lower half of the door and a hole in the floor, plus a bidet. And as one wit remarked, bidet was two days before D-Day...!

Once upon a time, railroad crossings were manned, and the barriers were muscle powered.

"This type of crossing was encountered in places lost to man but not to game, in deep countryside preferably near or in a small wood. I kept a few in 1969 or 1970. The day was long (12 hours of presence! Long live the 35 hours) but I enriched it with the reading of large books and observations of the surrounding fauna and flora. I think it must have been hard in the winter at night, but the students were on vacation in the summer! The gates were constantly closed, they were opened when a rare passer-by asked for passage, sometimes a herd of a few horned and fortunately disciplined animals hurried slowly while one wondered if a train would not unexpectedly appear. It never happened. The beginner's luck no doubt! I think these small huts replaced older, more rustic shelters that the caretaker of 1960 would have refused..."
