Just one small question: I presume you showed us a draft of the extra cones - I think the LRO cone does not have such pronounced rings. This picture clearly shows some ribbing but not as heavy as on the model.

Did I say "fault"? I meant inspiration ...

I see your point PK - it's a matter of lighting angles.

Reality is they are ribs that look to be a good inch/3cm tall. I should probably tone down the graphics to a more neutral gray. PM me if you feel up to a beta-build of this iteration - after you finish the shelves.

Current project

So, progress continues. Worked up the rest of the Atlas V since the payload fairings are now done (just tubes all the way down ... mostly). Standing by for (brutally honest) comments from a couple of great builders; then fix what needs fixing and post with Chris at ECardmodels.

I think I'll rationalize this as a continuation of the "manned rockets" series I started with the rocket gardens. I still have one set left less the Long March, Saturn V, and Shuttle. Build up those, add the Falcon 9/Dragon (1:200) and do an Atlas (also cut down to 1:200) with Boeing's CST-100 capsule (and associated adapter fairing). The only booster missing (that's actually flying) would be the Delta IV/CST-100 ... which I would have to draw (yes, I've read the article on modelling the aft end of that bugger!!). Off course there's also Orbital's entry, and then ...

We'll see - first, I'm sure I still have fixes to make.

Keeping current

Just an update as most of the action is coming from Dyna-Soar and Paper Kosmonaut (who I have shamelessly duped into helping me sort out the latest effort). Having someone try and interpret your chicken scratchings is very enlightening - and makes sure you put all the "scratch built" changes on a prototype back into the files.

One example of a fix; this to the avionics tray.

A good use for that 30+ lb resume paper ...

Something to join the 1:200 rocket garden.

Yogi,
that's great work! You really found the perfect way to replicate the 500-payload fairing! And all the small spacecraft... where do you take the time to draw all this?
Personally, if I may say, I think that the small payload fairing is a bit pointy, compared to the round appearance of the real fairing (think you have enough pictures, but for the readers:

Probably a small circle would do a good job to smooth it out... But really, it's just my impression.

Absolutely correct, Thorsten - and you may certainly say so. Actual shape/dimensions are:

The decision to model it as two cones was to make it easier to build. You can see the fairing is basically one conic topped with a spherical/rounded tip. Most accurate way to model the tip is with petals/gores (did I say I hate building, much less drawing those buggers?). Second option would be to use two/three very short conics to make the turn. Or, carry the major conic almost to the top and close with a flat disk.

The best choice is just that, a choice - and your's is as good as mine. Best thing about paper; you can modify it easily to match your vision.

Yogi (feedback is good ...)

There must be something wrong with me -- because I am fairly certain I figured out what that is within a couple seconds. (I have a lot of extra time on my hands for research, what can I say...)

Slightly worrying on the one hand, reassuring that it's recognizable on the other ...
