Some nice birds, John. You are going to have quite a flock. Something to keep you busy in your old age. Birds, can't live with them, can't live without them.

Ohiomike ... See post #498 for the link. Post #499 for contact with Ben.
Elliott ... Thank you, compliments will get you everywhere. They are not perfect, but I do try to aim for it. Doug ... I'm afraid that old age period is already here mate. And next we have Malcolm Topp's Nuthatch ... Fairly straightforward this one. Built in a morning ... Malcolm's Nuthatch meets Johan's Nuthatch ... I'll have to keep an eye out for them building a nest ... Keep on snippin' .... Johnny. |

Just to wake the thread up ... here's my Johan collection so far...
Room for a few more in that corner yet. and this one is patiently waiting for her mate ... Who is waiting for me to make his feet ... There's still a few more of Johan's in the pile (and some of Malcolm's BirdMobiles) but the other (Bruno) birds are what currently occupies a lot of my time Keep on snippin' ... Johnny. |

Johan's House Sparrows finished ...
On the cover it clearly states "EASY TO MAKE" ... Yeah, like really? Mind you, the instructions are very good, but I did have to reprint and start again on the male as I didn't read the picture correctly. Somehow getting the leg tubes sticking out the top. These are somewhat different in construction to any of the other Johan birds I've made. I suspect they are much earlier designs. The more complex construction does however lead to much sturdier models, and the end results are very life-like. Johan supplies bases, which the legs are extended down into, to make a strong and steady display. Of course, me being me, I have removed this extension and made the feet to stand flat on the floor (I'm still working on curling the toes to perch them on a twig). I have hardened up the legs and toes using CA, and it didn't take much tweaking to get them to balance unsupported on their own feet. My birds are possibly lighter than the original designs, as I have copied and ink jetted them onto 160gsm card, which I find softer and easier to work than the laser printed Bristol board supplied. Where hardening is needed the CA soaks into the softer card much better, but then again, the Bristol board probably wouldn't need to be hardened. Oh yeah ... I was unable to include my usual personalisation touch of rotating the heads a little ... Johan had already done this, and they wouldn't fit together properly if you tried to make them look straight ahead. Overall opinion ... an excellent kit that is well worth buying. Thank you for another excellent design Johan. Keep on snippin' ... Johnny. PS: Do I do the Jay or the Starling next ... Hmmm? |

Err, well neither. Malcolm's cheeky little Robin fought it's way to the top of the pile, and now flies with the gang ...
This was an easy straightforward build with good instructions. Little bit of burnishing required to smoothly round the head, and it does benefit from being stuffed with tissue paper to round out the body. Keep on snippin' ... Johnny. |
